SMC student newspaper captures 12 awards

The Santa Monica College (SMC) student newspaper TheCorsair won 12 awards – including five first-place awards – in two student journalism competitions recognizing the best of student journalism from

Corsair Editor-in-Chief NikLucaj and Corsair News Editor Adam Thomas are finalists in the Regional 11 Mark of Excellence awards sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists in the multimedia storytelling category. Final results will be announced at the Region 11 spring conference at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Ariz. on April 30.

The Corsair also won 11 awards in a California competition sponsored by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC).

The Corsair earned five first-place awards at the JACC conference, including Ramses Lemus for Feature Photo, AlciRengifo for News Story, Amanda Looma for Online Photo Story, DotanSaguy for Photo Story-Essay, and RonjaJansz for Profile Feature Story.

The Corsair awards were part of JACC’s publications contest, which represent the best of student journalism from California’s community colleges published during the last academic year. The awards were announced at the organization’s state convention held from March 17-20 in Burbank.

Saul Rubin is the Corsair advisor and instructor of the journalism class that produces the print and online editions of the Corsair, and instructor Gerard Burkhart is the photo adviser.
